I must have waited too long because the summer stock of ferns at local nurseries and even some local flower shops were sold out. I did find a couple of neglected specimens at one garden centre but they were barely hanging on. Driving a little further in my search this week, I found this beautiful and healthy Kimberley Queen fern for 50% off (reg $29.99 Cdn.) at Terra (a greenhouse chain in Ontario.)
For now I have placed it in the dining room in a large galvanized bucket (not too much sun in here.)
I bought the unfinished solid pine plant stand for $8 from a retiring woodworker. I used black latex paint that I had on hand (a $1 Martha Stewart sample in Francesca) and waxed it with Minwax paste wax. The boxes with decoy details and the two chunky pine benches that were painted grey and black for our basement TV area were finished in July.
I may move the plant at some point but for now we are enjoying seeing it when we come in the front door.
Hopefully I can keep it healthy and enjoy the lovely green throughout the winter months.
