LANE Cedar Chest

I have found some great deals at local garage sales these past two weekends, but this Lane cedar chest is my favourite find.

I was at a yard sale on the street behind our home and asked the lady what she was asking for it. When she said $20 I scooped it up, no bargaining required. It is cedar lined and really well made.

The little envelope attached has the original Lane love chest key inside.

I really don't have a good spot for this hope chest/blanket box in our home so I will be selling it. I was considering painting it but first I will see if it sells in the current wood finish. It is in really good condition.

Today I picked up some great frames for $1 each, and a trio of mirrors for $1 for all 3. The frames and mirrors have a date with some paint in the near future.
I hope you are having a great weekend, and for my fellow Canadians, what are your plans for this long Victoria Day weekend? My boys are camping at some 4-H friends' farm (only 10 minutes away) and hubby and I are getting a few items checked off our to do list.

Edited May 25, 2012: This piece has sold.

  1. What luck!! I need to find some better garage sales. I can't ever seem to find such great bargains! I think it would look great painted. To bad you don't have room for it.

  2. That's an amazing find Elizabeth! I remember years ago when Lane chests were popular gifts for hope chests and keepsakes. I don't even think woman have hope chests anymore! Have a wonderful weekend! Angie xo

  4. Lucky you to find such a great cedar chest. My granddaughter (she is 25) uses the one that belonged to her great grandmother (my mil). She is actually using it as a place to put the special dishes and things she is saving for her home when she marries. Just like old times! I did very well at the Victoria Weekend garage sales. What beautiful weather we are having.

  5. Wow, what a find! Love your shot! Sorry I been so quiet these last couple weeks, I’ve been really ill (now finally diagnosed with Whooping Cough even though I was immunized) and have had a very rough week.

  7. Hi Elizabeth,
It is in excellent shape. Are you sure you don't have a spot for it? Maybe for your fabric stash in your sewing room? Especially since it is cedar lined. I think it would look great painted, I can't wait to see the colour you choose! Have a great long weekend. Thank you, for dropping by!
    All the Best,
    Christine

  8. What a great find for just $20! I can't believe you're not going to keep it. Oh well, maybe you can make some money off it if you sell it.

  10. Hi Elizabeth! I am old enough to remember when the Lane Company marketed those chest to high school and college girls as "hope chests" to save up items for housekeeping when you got married. How times have changed. That chest does look like it is in amazing condition...a great find. I saw your post over at "Coastal Charm".

  14. Elizabeth Ann,
Thank you for visiting Elizabeth Ann's from FFF. I always love meeting Elizabeth Anns!

Spent a little time looking around Blue Clear Sky and I enjoyed my visit. You did get a great deal on the cedar chest. I bought one recently and decided to not paint it at first to just see what happens, it SOLD!

LOVE all your pillows too. I keep telling my self that I could make pillows. Just have to get the sewing machine out and go for it.

    Thanks again for stopping by.

    Joyfully,
    Elizabeth Ann
