Painted Cottage Beach Style

It might be because I am yearning for blue skies and gardens full of spring and summer flowers on this cold and rainy day,

or it could be that my style is evolving again, but I know that I was really drawn to the light and bright interior of this lovely home, featured in the April 2012 issue of Canada's Style at Home magazine (and online at styleathome.)

I love the serene white rooms seen in many magazines and blogs and I have been working on putting  together an all white guest bedroom in our home. But this feature is making me rethink my choices.  I am loving this "painted cottage beach style" with lots of white mixed with pale aqua blues, blue-greens, grayish greens and pops of pink. I might try a few pops of pink in our basement guest bedroom and see how it feels, but I will definitely be adding more blue.

My style preference tends to swing from country farmhouse to beach/lakeside and I often struggle trying to make the two styles merge in our home (and not look hideous.) I love the lightness and beachy/lakeside vibe mixed with the farmhouse rustic stairs and plank floor of the hallway in this Maine beach house (by the Toronto owners of Au Lit Fine Linens and Liv By Au Lit.)

This is such a lovely dining room with the mix of white dining table and turquoise painted chairs. More hardwood floors too.

Love the pops of pretty pinks, like the bright interior of this pretty corner cabinet. and the softest pinks in the floral fabrics. I used to have more pink in our first home, but my style has changed to more neutrals.

I painted an old maple writing desk white for our guest room and had planned to paint a chair blue. After seeing this photo I am definitely going to do it.

More lovely creamy white painted furniture and simple white window coverings with light blue-grey walls. I am not planning to repaint our entire main floor at this time, but the powder room in our front hall needs a little makeover and a light blue-grey might be just what it needs.

A lovely vintage dresser painted a pale blue...

and lots of white and pale blue linens.

Blue has always been my favourite colour. I almost always feel right about using blues in our home. Aquas or turquoise, navy or sky, or palest blues, even greyish blues or blue-greens. They all make me happy, especially with lots of white around. I will still use black painted pieces and scrubbed or simple pine for the part of me that craves a bit of 'rustic', and I love neutrals and lots of white, but I see a lot more blue in our home's future. Starting with a Windsor chair for that little guest bedroom desk. That is, as soon as it stops raining and warms up so I can sand outdoors.

Happy April 1st! I have been busy this week with normal family and work time, but I also got some work done on a few little projects I have been  working on. One project includes a pale shade of blue, Aegean Sea by Martha Stewart. What colour makes your heart sing?

  3. I agree with you. I love neutrals and white rooms, but sometimes it's nice to throw a little color in there every now and then. I've been drawn to blue lately myself. I think because it is a nice compliment to grey and white and is a little swedish looking to me when used in small does with those neutrals. It's also a great choice for summer! Looking forward to seeing your next project.

  7. So funny to read this post. Yesterday when my daughter Jessica and I were out window shopping the beach theme won me over. I came home and searched rooms online. I am draw to the same colors as you. I hope when I move I can redo my living room on a budget that is!
