Furniture Finds

I check our local kijiji (like Craigslist) daily for furniture deals and haven't found anything affordable for a while now. That is until this weekend.

From the same seller, right here in our town, we purchased this antique dresser and a little desk. I couldn't believe what great prices they were listed for. And spotless too.

The dresser is solid wood with dovetail drawers and lovely turned front legs. It was recently refinished but I now have to decide if it might look even better with some white paint.

This little desk is solid maple and made by Vilas (a Quebec, Canada furniture manufacturer well known for solid maple colonial style furniture.) It has a drawer and two little letter slots on the backboard. Not a scratch on it! I am pretty sure it is going to get a few coats of white chalk paint and light distressing. The desk would work well in a few places in our home, but I think it will go in our basement guest room.

So, would you paint the dresser white and distress it? I was thinking of leaving the top of both sections stained (all photos in the home of the seller.)

  3. I think that is the perfect type piece for leaving a bit of the wood showing like the top.

  10. You found some really nice pieces of furniture!! It's hard to find things around here on kijiji at decent prices :( I love the wood on the dresser, I myself would leave it, but the desk would look cute painted :) Have fun what ever you decide!!

  13. Love your new furniture finds! It would depend on where you plan on using the dresser to advise you whether you should paint it or not. I don't think you mentioned that. Your desk would be charming used in the guestroom. It would even make a cute bedside table with a chair or bench under it! I love non-traditional bedside tables.

  15. I feel like I'm swimming upstream here against the flow, but if it has just been refinished...I'd probably leave it as is - at least for a while.

  16. Elizabeth- That dresser is amazing. I'd be tempted to leave it as is and add a big white pitcher with flowers, on top. That dresser could go in any room... I wish I could find one like that around here...

The desk would be so pretty in white paint.

  17. What wonderful pieces, Elizabeth!
If you were buying pieces specifically to paint white, then that's what you should do.
I just found a vanity that is gorgeous, and very detailed. My husband is having fits about me painting it white....but that was my original plan...to find one to paint white to go with my decor.
Everyone has their own taste, and ideas. You do what would please your eye, and your heart.
Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will look great in your awesome home!

  20. hi i was wondering if u know anything about the dresser. i have the same one that was passed down through the generations and i am trying to date this piece.. thanks so much and great find..

  21. I would do that dresser in a light yellow and maybe a little aqua on details. Are you going to keep the original hardware which is excellent? Hope so. Can date the dresser by the hardware style on it.
I think I might want to start looking on Craigs list for some good pieces. Anything at the thrift stores is way over priced anymore. Love your dresser and your blog.
