Bedroom Curtain Colour Choices Opinions Please

I'm struggling over the colour direction for our basement guest bedroom.
I love the fresh new Benjamin Moore Cotton Ball walls but I'm stuck on curtain colours. I tried the blue paisley Waverly print I sewed...
and I sewed a white cotton pair from a Land's End king sheet. (I haven't spent a lot of time on getting good lighting for photos quite yet, too much to do still.)

Before I make little curtains for the other two tiny windows, I thought I would ask for the opinions of my friends and readers.

I like lots of white but with blue and wood tones as well. The following are my inspiration photos, but I'm not planning on copying them, rather just using them loosely for a 'feel' and colours. I also don't want to spend too much on new items and hope to re purpose and collect items.
So my question is should I use the blue paisley and use lots of blue and white for linens and accessories in the room....
or should I use the lighter white curtains and touches of blue?
The carpeting is grey. The ticking and flannel quilt and paisley curtains both have grey in them. The bedskirt is blue denim but I could sew a white one. I have lots of white textiles for pillows.
I would love love to hear your opinions and ideas. Today I am leaning towards the white curtains and maybe using the denim and plaid quilt folded at the end of the bed. What I would really love is a white coverlet. What do you think?

  1. I personally love the white curtains with touches of blue. Although the blue plaid is nice also. You can also change for a new look which is another idea....

  2. I ran right over to see! I'm leaning toward the white as well, but I think they look a bit to airy by themselves...maybe add another layer of a textured cream or white with them? Or layer some bamboo shades under them? The blue seemed too heavy for the bright white walls. I'm assuming you'll be adding some warm wood tones in there too? Very Ralph Lauren :) I noticed quite a bit of the brown accents (wood, fabric) in your inspiration pics. I think it would look really cool if you did some kind of smallish wall collage of mirrors or little prints in wood frames on the wall under the window between the drapes too. When it's done, can I come stay???

    1. I agree about the blinds being added for texture and also for a bit more room darkening if guests want to sleep in. I will have to look into this.

  3. I think the white would look the best. It would make it all feel open and spacious plus give it that clean crisp look.

  4. I love the white with maybe bamboo match stick blinds underneath in your lovely wood colour...what a look your onto! Stunning :)

  5. I love the blue curtains, but they're a bit much on their own against the white walls. Why don't you use both sets? The blue outside to frame the window, and the white panels to act almost as sheers (when closed) and to soften the blue. I love all the blue accents with the white too.

    2. Ditto, but try switching the white to the outside, too, and see which looks better to you, Elizabeth.

  6. I favor the white because they are more airy and you can have so much flexibility with your bedding and pillows.

  7. I like the white as well. Maybe a bit of trim or a pretty border to bring in more blue?

  9. In the photos you've shown, I'd vote for the blue--the white ones seem to disappear--maybe if the fabric was lined (?).

  10. Dare I suggest a tan instead? Or tan outside and the whites inside??

  11. I vote white with bamboo shades. The blue looks too heavy to me. You could repurpose the blue curtains into pillows.

  12. Hi Elizabeth!
I had this same "problem" in my office!!
I chose to keep and hang both sets of curtains, with....believe it or not, the blue curtains as the inner panels. The white panels are at the outside edges of the window.
I think it would look great in this room, as well. Try it!?
    See what you think?
    HUGS,

P.S. I will be finished with my office in the next week or two and then you can see what I did.

  15. For a basement room, I would say the brighter the better! But honestly, I don't think you could go wrong with either choice. Your house always looks lovely.

  16. I love the bamboo blinds idea...it would make the white pop. What if you lined the white curtains and then added a wide border of blue fabric on the inside edge and bottom edge? I think that would bring in texture, still keep it airy, and tie all the white + blue + wood tones together.

  17. For your bedroom small window I would make them cafe style...using the blue material with it's own curtain rod starting where the window sil is and making the top cafe style out of the white fabric...keep the lower blue material closed (meeting) and the upper cafe white material open to let in the light. The darker material at the bottom will help anchor the room.

    Joyfully,

  18. I noticed that both of your inspiration images have one thing in common, the light and white feel. You won't be happy with the dark blue draperies if that is what you are going for. You need a white coverlet as well and use your flannelette quilt at the end of the bed. You could do a white faux roman shade on the small window. That is what I do in my house, I love the white and a bit of color together. Your walls look beautiful.
Have a great day and whatever you do, I know it will be beautiful. An idea for your blue draperies if you don't use them as draperies, could you make a bed skirt out of them?

  19. OMG! I can finally comment on your blog now! Yay! I'm so happy. I've hated to not be able to lately. I love how your room is coming along. I have to say either curtain color would look great, honestly. It's just according to which feel you want. A lighter more summery feel or a slightly heavier feel with the contrasting fabric. You could even switch them out for the seasons! I really like your inspiration pics too.

  20. I'm voting for the white curtains. I really like how soft they look and how your eye isn't drawn to the window (which lets face it, is a basement window), but goes to the bedding.

  21. I love the white curtains...they give the room such an airy, ethereal feel.

  22. Well, I guess I am alone on this one but i would say both. Can you incorporate the white under the blue. I think the layering will give it a nice effect in the space. Matter of fact I would go a step further and add in the bamboo blind as well. Personally, as a guest I might not even leave the basement with all that going on!

  24. I like the blue, or how about the white panels with bamboo blinds for the wood tone?

  25. I think you made the right choice with the white. Very restful and calm. Can't wait to see the addition of the rattan blinds...it will really bring in the natural element and ground the space. Cheers.
