Wind Turbines

On our route up north we pass these giant wind turbines. Modern technology in the midst of agriculture. Fascinating and controversial.

My husband's family and extended family live in Grey County, near Georgian Bay, here in Ontario and we pass through Shelburne and Melancthon on our two hour trip north and again on the way home. The turbines are sculpture-like and produce huge amounts of wind hydro, but there are concerns with locals with the noise and loss of farmland. I'm not picking sides of the debate, I just think they are fascinating.
We have actually had rain a few times these past two weeks and things are not as dry now. If you drive the roads between them as we do, no matter the season, you may find yourself totally surprised by their enormous size. I hope you enjoy the week ahead!

  1. We have those all over down here. Texas billionaire T. Boone Pickens is all over this wind energy as an alternative source of energy for the states. I don't think it is as controversial down here. We have "wind farms" out in the country where there are quite a few of these grouped together. They even have one at the new football stadium at the university we attended. They are quite interesting.

  4. Hi Elizabeth,

I have driven by those as well. They are very distracting and are so large, hard to keep your eyes on the road when going by them...
    Great pictures!!
    All the Best,
    Christine

  5. The wind turbines are big business here in south western ontario too. We absolutely love them and can even see a bunch of them across the fields from our new front door. I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't help but stare at their size while I'm driving!

  7. Beautiful photos, Elizabeth. The turbines are somewhat like abstract art.

  8. I also find them fascinating. There aren't any around where I live in N.B. but there are some in Albert County, and Northumberland and Resitgouche counties. Also, in Mars Hill, Maine on the hill itself there a LOT of them - a wind farm I guess. PEI has a huge wind farm as well. Controversial and fascinating. :-)

  9. I feel the same way you do - always amazed whenever I drive by a field of wind turbines.

On a side note - I was just up in the Georgain Bay area with my family last week. My parents have a place on Huckleberry Island in Parry Sound. Just felt the need to share:)
