Denim and Vintage Crochet ~And Opinions Needed!

I adore denim and white. I would wear it all day, every day if I could. I also love vintage crochet in whites and creams.

So, I decided to combine my love of denim and white and add more of it to our home. I started by making quilt inspired denim and white pillows for our leather couch. When I reorganized my studio/hobby room, I came across some vintage crocheted pieces. Using an old pine frame, some dark wash denim and a vintage crochet piece, I came up with my own kind of art. I decided not to reuse the glass. This is where I need some help (sorry for the blurry photos!)

The room is pretty plain so I decided to try a wall gallery similar to this PB one, but in colour instead of black and white.

Our living room right after being painted BM Cotton Balls and trim BM Snowfall White.

I need opinions please! Am I on the right track? Should I scrap it and start again on the wall with the ladder (a bigger space)? I really want to use the large photo I took of a favourite barn but thought it was too small by itself. Should I bring the Cows in a Field cross stitched piece lower and not include the denim and crochet piece in the gallery? Or should I continue to fill in the empty spaces? So like me to start hanging before I totally have a plan! I would love to hear what you think 'cause I am at a standstill right now.

Some of the frames are empty still, and I haven't bought anything yet, just using what I have so far. The perfectly rusty large paper clips are from the giveaway I won at 3 Ring Cottage. I'm looking forward to hearing opinions.

  1. Thanks for your visit. Looks like you are into a big project, I can't tell you what to do here but I always say..go with that first gut feeling, it is always right and we tend to second guess ourselves to death! Plus no one can speak for us..you will know what to do. :D

  2. I have been where you are (just a few days ago), with what to hang where on my walls in the kitchen/family room. It finally all started to work yesterday! I went with what I really liked, not what I thought looked best, but what I liked. The colors and everything ended up working together and now I have my favorite things! Use what you like, or your favorite things and go from there:) I would love to see your finished room.

  3. I think you are going in the right direction, in my opinion, I would just fill in some of the empty spots. Take your time, find what you really like. Perhaps 2 more vintage crochet pieces would look nice. It would make them really stand out as something you love.

  6. Projects...always projects!!!! It's a love/hate isn't it:):)
I say keep going in the direction you're headed!!! It will shape up to exactly what you're after:)

  7. I think to keep the crochet piece you need to balance it with another frame in the same wood tones under the cows in the field. I think it should be one large piece since you have the 2 small prints below. I like the fact you have added a texture here instead of all prints! One more thing that might help also is a dark blue (Denim type) throw rug or even better a rag rug! Have fun playing and completing your space.

  9. Hi Elizabeth,
I think the room looks great. Love the gallery wall. I would just add other pieces of art...maybe something other than frames to the empty spaces. Definitely going in the right direction though...Awesome job.

Thank you so much for stopping by today and for your kind comment. Wishing you a wonderful day.

    Hugs and Smiles,
    ♥Ana

  10. I agree with the majority of comments, keep going and don't rush it. Make a few more of your very unique art with the denim and crochet and built it they way that it feels good to you. I love gallery walls! And yours will be truly amazing when you are finished, because it will be unique and so YOU.
    Hugs, Cindy

  11. I think it's a great start. I would fill it in a little more with the denim/crochet type pieces..smaller ones, to balance it out a little. I just did a gallery wall and it took me quite awhile to get it just right. I would leave the room then come back in and change something...on and on and over and over. So, I guess I'm saying..take your time and do what looks best to you and fits your family and lifestyle!

  12. Let it grow organically. Do not be confined by the couch dimensions though. Pull more of your crochet pieces in definitely. They are uniquely you. I love the paper clips :) Just keep adding, it doesn't have to be *done*.... ya know?

  14. First, love the crochet lace and denim art. As for your question, I think the gallery is great above the sofa (I realize you're still working on finishing it up). BUT. BUT. BUT. If you have a feeling it will look better on the wall with the ladder, ask yourself if keeping it above the sofa is going to nit pick at you every time YOU look at it. If you think it will, go with the ladder wall! I have been in that situation so many times. It will look gorgeous either way, in my opinion. But I agree, your barn picture needs some company above the sofa. You will make it beautiful. You always do!
