Armoire Paint Colour Advice Needed

I have been busy painting a few pieces this weekend and will post when they are finished. What I am really hoping for is some advice from all of you on a paint colour for this armoire.

We bought the armoire for $75 on kijiji and it holds office supplies in the top and mason jars and large Tupperware on the bottom shelves. The armoire is in our family room, on the cathedral wall between the family room windows and the kitchen patio doors. Our walls on most of the main floor are Benjamin Moore Stone House CC-120, and our trim is Benjamin Moore Snowfall White OC-118.

The wall colour is not gold like it appears in some of these photos. The armoire is pine and although I love stained pieces, this one is quite orange and clashes with the stained oak in the kitchen buffet and hutch (just to the left of the patio doors in the photo above.) I know I need to move the curtain rods over a bit so that the curtains are not crammed behind the armoire. There is lots of room to do it, I just need to remember.

The photo below shows the board and batten short end wall directly across from the armoire (4 feet away.)

I'm hoping my readers will chime in with an opinion on whether I should paint the armoire Snowfall White like the trim or a light grey or charcoal grey, black or aqua? I am nervous about the grey not going with the tan walls, but I know others like the two together (grey is my last choice right now.) I'm thinking the black will be too dark, although our kitchen farmhouse table and chairs and dining room hutch are black. Another possibility would be the aqua I used on my bar stools (in the photo above) and in accessories throughout our main floor, including both the adjoining kitchen and family room. The aqua seems kind of a fun choice and is on the lighter end which is what I think I will like more. So is the white but is it too safe a choice and up against the white curtains?

I'm really looking forward to your opinions. Thanks so much!

  1. Have you considered a pale shade of gray? Gray always look beautiful with oak floors so it just might work to help coordinate the armoire with your oak buffet.

  3. That's a beautiful find! Very nice. I'd go with aqua too I think or use aqua as a base coat then paint it white and sand off the edges etc. to shabby it so the aqua will show through. I have all these ideas in my head but never use them on my stuff. LOL

  4. Before I got to the end with the color choices, I was thinking a pop of color would look great so perhaps the aqua but the exact same shade as the stools (too matchy matchy). Perhaps you could add a touch of black to the same aqua to darken it a bit or add white to lighten it a bit. I think a soft shade of gray would look really great too. Good luck! I hate choosing paint colors because I can never make up my mind.

  5. Elizabeth, I would go with a deeper more intense aqua than the other items. That way the armoire will stand out on its own.

  6. I'm for aqua! I think it will be amazing in between the white curtains, and bring in the color from the other areas. It's a lovely piece!
Thank you for ALL your sweet comments at Red Hen Home! They make my day.

  7. Hello Elizabeth,
I'm with Kim, I would go with either a more intense aqua or an aqua with a soft white wash. To paint it the same as the stools would indeed make it too matchy-matchy.

Also...if the knobs are removable..maybe change them out to something really pretty.

Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing this girl restyled!

  8. I think aqua would look fantastic!! Have you seen the aqua armoire in the home of the Dreamy White's blog. I'm in love with it! I think your armoire in aqua would contrast so prettily with your white curtains!

  9. Hi Elizabeth,
Thanks so much for visiting my blog. I really appreciated your comment! Your house is very warm and inviting. I vote for the aqua for your armoire. The real truth is, if it were for me; I would paint it a pop of red. I have a red and turquoise kitchen and family room which I love. But for some that is too bold. So I vote aqua. Although, I think that the charcoal grey would be awesome too. Boy, I'm alot of help aren't I? Gotta laugh at myself.

  11. Elizabeth- Charcoal grey! It would really ground the room. It's a handsome piece and will look even better painted whatever color you choose!

  12. I would paint it gray as well - likely a darker gray. I like the idea that it would contrast with the curtains and walls, but not be as dominating as black would be. I would also paint the star above it the same colour and use the same shade at least one other place in the room, like in some throw cushions on the sofa. Otherwise it would be the only gray thing in the room.

  13. Hmmmm, what about white with some distressing and then a dark glaze over the distressed bits and edges/crevices?

I think white or a light grey will help it blend more into the room since it's such a large piece.

But, that's just my opinion because I am too chicken to use bold colours! :)

  14. hi elizabeth!

thanks so much for sharing my giveaway info. i love the armoire and totally can appreciate your angst over paint color. for me it would come down to whether i want the piece to recede into the background or stand out. and for me the options would be white or black. so white if you would like it to blend in with your other choices and black if you need it to pop. i guess i would also consider whether painting it black would create imbalance or balance in the space, depending on what is at the other end of the room. but it's a great piece and worth taking this time to consider!

    best to you!

  16. Elizabeth I like the aqua idea like you painted your chairs at the counter! White is always a good option too. Can't wait to see the transformation! Martina

  17. Hi Elizabeth, and thanks for visiting me. As soon as i saw the armoire I thought, light gray, maybe with a touch of French blue. I'll look forward to seeing the final result!

  18. I think you need a darker color for some contrast- but I know many in this blogging community love everything to be pale colors- lots of shades of white and cream round these sites! I like the charcoal suggestion myself. But if you're not into a contrast, I also think dark version of a blue green would look awesome! Good luck!

  19. I have to say AQUA as well, to match the aqua bar stools. I love that armoire, it is a really wonderful piece of furniture!

  20. I say go black to make a bold statement and it would match your chairs along with your curtain rods. Then bring in some aqua accessories to decorate with. It would look great with the tan and white that you already have.

  21. I would recommend you go two shades darker than the Stone House colour on your walls. Then the unit would blend in and almost look like a built-in. Personally, I would prefer the jolt of colour to be in what you will be putting on top of the unit, like the black candle holders you already have with a few glass or ceramic vases in your aqua colour.
Can't wait to see what you decide to do.

  22. My first thought as I looked at your LOVELY home was that black would make it pop and would coordinate beautifully with your wall color, trim and wainscoating. No doubt whatever you choose to do will look great!

  23. Hi Elizabeth! What a great deal you got on the armoire. My vote would be for white with the inserts painted a very light gray. Its a great piece and will look wonderful in any of the colors.
