I Love Decorating With Black!

I love seeing all the beautiful white rooms out there, and I enjoy using lots of whites and neutrals in our home. But I don't think I would be happy without black elements in our home.

Black goes so well with white, and I love it with stainless steel and galvanized metal.

Some people like having certain colours in their homes, others prefer lots of white. While I love accenting with shades of blue and using lots of whites and neutrals, black is my preferred 'colour'. Black can add sophistication to a room, or a simple country feel. I was happy to recently read popular blogs mentioning that 'black is back'. Black didn't really ever leave our place!

Melaine at My Sweet Savannah recently shared that no matter how many times she redecorates, she goes 'back to black'. Pat at Back Porch Musings has a gorgeous home, and along with beautiful wood tones, has some gorgeous black painted pieces. Sandy at Paint Me White shared the lovely contrast of black and white in 'Black is Back'.

I was surfing through kijiji the other day, and found my way to a Toronto blog and store, Kimberley Jackson, with some beautiful furniture made from salvaged materials. They have some awesome black pieces as well.
I painted this farmhouse table and Windsor chairs black.

I also like mixing black with plain or scrubbed pine like in our dining room. While this is too country for some, it really appeals to me.

Especially when I add in lots of white china and simple white drapes.

I also like using black frames, as I did here in our family room, with or without white mats.

Do you like black accessories or furniture in your home? Or is black just not your thing? I would love for you to share your thoughts.

  1. I like black furniture in photos (like the beautiful ones you've shown us!) and I like it in peoples homes, but when I've had black furniture in my own home I don't really like it. It just doesn't feel right. What can I say, I'm a weirdo. ;)

  4. I love black ... even in little touches ... curtain rods, lamp bases, handles, candle sticks, picture frames. Black grounds a room, and gives you a visual resting place.

  5. I"m with you on the black. I really like furniture painted black, love black picture frames, and feel that every room needs a bit of black. I think we are moving away from these all white rooms.

  6. I don't have a lot of black, but what I do like is the contrast that you get using black with a lighter color like white or a pale shade of something... I know that not everyone likes contrast. Like I said, I don't have much black but I do have quite a bit of dark wood and brown to bronze painted pieces with lots of white, aqua, pale greens for contrast.

When I look at your pictures I like how the pale green hydrandgeas or the white "pop" against your black!

  7. I always decorate with black too! I have the black windsor chairs, a black & white floor and a black breakfast table. Love your blog and can't wait to see what color you choose for your living room. I just took all the red out of mine!! Yay!

  9. Hi Elizabeth ~ I think hits of black always seem to ground a space! I've added some black accents to my space that I think work well with any colour scheme!

  10. Elizabeth,

First off, I love your family room! Oh my goodness... very cozy! Ummm... I used to have a lot of black in my home and it started to feel really heavy. I got on this white kick and never looked back. I do like the pictures that you've shown and I think black pairs nicely with white. I just have a hard time coordinating the two. I do like to mix some black accents with my space though. Just like what you've done with the frames and stripes in the pillows.

Thanks for the great post! xo

  11. Hi Elizabeth -

I am so glad you left comments on my blog - thanks - I can't believe I have never been to your blog before - it is beautiful, your photos are terrific. So clear and vivid. What kind of camera do you use?
I love touches of black - I think it is the perfect anchor color and when placed evenly around the room - it puts everything in balance.
My oldest daughter was in 4-H for 14 years - she loved it. She was part of the equestrian team and taught horseback riding lessons. Her room is filled with all her 4H ribbons and trophies. I smiled when I saw the 4H Graphic in your sidebar.

    My best- Diane

  12. I read somewhere that every room should have a touch of black to ground it. I have some black in every room. I love the neutrals but with a touch of black, dark wood and some pops of red. That's my style.

  13. I like touches of black but I find that large pieces such as armoires, hutches, etc. really are not easy to live with because they show dust all the time.

  18. I love having black in a home...it is the best accent color ever! My daughter had an old vanity and it was black, then she redid it in a wood color...it is now back to black and it is beautiful. :D

  21. Years, and years ago, I learned that a little touch of black in a room can really add a lot. Since then, I've made it a rule to use black in just about every room in my home. Through the years I've gotten bolder and added more black to some areas and really love it. We have a round, pedestal table and Windsor chairs in our breakfast room all painted black and they are probably some of my favorite pieces of furniture in the house. I found that one black Windsor chair makes a really great accent just about anywhere with any color.

  23. I love your blog! I also love hits of black around my space. I find that although I do have lots of white, the black provides a great grounding for the white. Funny, I have a similar style...well sorta...black cabinet in my dining room...ours is a post office turned wine rack but feels similar. Love yours!

  26. You have a beautiful home. Black furnitures are indeed pretty. By the way, I love your living room, and I'm seeing a great flower arrangement as a centerpiece. Thanks for sharing these beautiful photos.

  27. Elizabeth- A black woodstove we bought two years ago is driving me to add more black to my room - to add some balance!

And I have the same blue Ball canning jars! I'm staring at one right now. it had husband-made peach jam in it and I am looking for it's lid. I may have to search the trash as those are lids I can't replace!

  28. I totally agree! Black mixed with wood tones and white accents makes me so happy. Everyone always talks about decorating with white (which I love) but I'm glad to see a post dedicated to the darker side (haha) of country decorating.
