Never Say Never

You wouldn't believe how many times I said we would never get a dog. Or all the reasons WHY we would never get a dog.
Meet our new puppy! Remington, Remi for short.
Our oldest son K, 13, has been seriously begging pleading asking for a dog for the last 8 years. He even got his younger brother J, who is a bit nervous of animals, on our case. As one of my older nieces said, Auntie Liz finally caved in.
They have shown their responsibility with the rabbit and 4-H. We have negotiated for 3 months.
Tuesday night we brought her home. She is a chocolate Lab, 13 weeks old.
Very, very cute, and remarkably well behaved considering she has been with us only two days.
It was about time for me to lose some of my hang-ups. To live in the moment. To be a little bit more relaxed about grass clippings at the door. Puppy nose prints on the patio doors. Our boys are growing up way too fast and this is something we are fortunate enough to give them now. Next up, puppy obedience classes.

I'm sharing this older post with The Nester's Take a Risk link up. Some people may wonder why I chose getting a dog as a risk, but for us it was a big risk. She is a fairly significant money investment, and some days is a lot of work or planning when one or more of us would rather be doing something else. But the best part is that at now eight months, she has turned out to be worth the risk. What is your risk?

  1. Oh I LOVE this post! Life is too short to have never been loved by a dog! And what an adorable dog you'll be loved by now!

    Congratulations!

  2. Congrats!!! She is absolutely beautiful. What a heart melter!

My only piece of advice and something I wish I'd known when we brought Callie home...is Cesar Millan (the dog whisperer). He knows and understands dogs and they aren't like humans that's for sure. I learned so much from his books, which are available as audio books too.

Your boys(and you!) will have lots of memories of this pup. Enjoy every moment.

  3. oh my goodness she is adorable. I can see why you fell for her. I find our dog is very good for getting me out for walks, even when the weather is lousy. Looks like fun times for everyone.

  5. We said we'd never have another dog agaon either. I read A Dogs Year by Jon Katz and realized what I was missing. 6 years later I have not regretted my decision to get our dog Cooper! I agree though with Rural Revival. Cesar is wonderful and training is vital! Enjoy Remi!

  9. Oh my goodness what a doll!

As you know, we have a black Lab, Molly. She is 8 years old and still a pup in the most delightful sense of the word! There is just something about Labrador Retrievers. Molly is our first Lab. We were told there is no other breed like them. We've had lots of dogs through the years; pure bred papered beauties and mixed breed beauties. Molly is definitely different.
Be prepared for years of enjoyment with Remi.

Labs are so intelligent, it is amazing. Molly practically trained herself. It is understandable they are often used as service dogs.

  10. PS:
Labs are very oral. This continues through many years. We remedy this with rawhides. She chewed a couple of chair legs before we figured it all out!LOL And they have a wonderful sense of humor. So much fun!

P.S. - I took obedience classes at a great training facility out your way. Let me know if you have any questions.

  17. What a cute puppy! I love dogs but is so hard when they get old. I have an old dog and it is so sad to seeing her struggling to get up. :(

  18. I think kids who don't get to have pets like this really miss out on some of the greatest joys of this like! God created them for us, I can't imagine not loving them. This is one gorgeous dog..we had 2 chocolate labs once..best dogs ever! I LOVE his name too!(I didn't know you were from such a big family too..awesome!)

  19. i have loved sooo many dogs . its so hard to pick a fav Willy was the most amazing german shorthair, Murphy our yellow lab still makes me tear up when i think of her she was wonderful [labs: play with her feet so you can cut those nails, get a furminator really helps with the shedding] puppy classes are great . i think for women 'the loved dog' by Tamar Geller is a great resource. the more time you and family spend with her the better. had a breeder tell me once is this going to be a backyard dog or a family member mine have all been family members ;).good luck! yours is beautiful!

  23. As the proud "mom" of a 12 year old chocolate...SOOOOOO worth the risk! We love our "brown beauty"...and have had her since she was 8 weeks. She was the best chocolate I ever received for Valentine's Day! Found you through "Nester"... loved your link! ;)
