Opinions needed please

We have had a busy weekend here doing family things and some organizing and rearranging. I was hoping I could get some opinions on our living room. We switched the leather sofa into the family room and it is working out well. The white slipcovered sofa is in the front living room now and I am continuing to move things around. I'm striving for a farmhouse at the lake feel (although we don't have a farmhouse or a lake-yet.)
This room is small and does not get a lot of natural light as the window is narrow and shaded by the porch roof. I added the two mirrors, flanking the wall shelf, hoping to reflect some light into the room. Dark paint does not work in here. Currently it is a creamy white with a hint of yellow. I need to look up the colour.
My first question is: Do the mirrors look odd there? Should I move them? If I take them down would the mantel shelf look odd by itself?  The large framed pieces and accessories can be moved. The table on the right is already moved to be our new computer table in the family room. Please feel free to leave a comment whether you have a suggestion or not. Have a great Sunday.
Edited to add: Thanks for all the great comments. I have added these older photos of our living room, when we had the leather couch in here, to give you a better idea. We still have all the pieces, some are just being used in other rooms. The chairs have white slipcovers almost completed.

  1. I think the mirrors look great where they are. Are they functioning as they should for the room? That is, do they bounce enough light in from the window(s)?? I think that would be the first place to start as far as whether you move them or not.

Also, since there is soooo much white in this room, maybe repaint the base boards/mouldings a slightly darker color to contrast. You seem to have a lot of earth tones, so pull something out of the rug or framed pieces to use as color. That might make it feel a bit more "farm-like". Most farmhouses I have been in tend to have stained or brown color trim throughout, so that's an idea.

Hope this helps and hope you get a bunch of opinions, but not so many to be overwhelmed. LOL

    Good Luck!

  2. Hi Elizabeth. I think your room looks lovely. If you're happy with it then that's what matters. We all have different taste however and I would personally move the mirrors though I'm not into clutter whereas lots of people are. I might look at placing one large horizontal mirror on the mantel (or hanging just above it) as a backdrop for any objects you might place on it. Or a tall mirror sitting on the floor behind the side table on the left could be balanced by a floor lamp on the right. I love the shape of your little side table. Good luck, though like I said, it does look lovely as is anyway.

  3. I just found you through a comment you left on my blog. Thank you by the way - i also LOVE LOVE LOVE comments. I am so new to the blogging world - i havent been able to figure out yet if there is a way for my blog to notify me that i have a new comment. Do you know if this is possible?

I like the mirrors but my original thought when i first looked at the room was that it would look awesome if you took those two mirrors down and found an awesome big mirror with a bit of character and maybe in white and put that on the mantle but like someone else said i cant tell if they are reflecting enough light from the windows. I added myself as a follower so that i could find out what you decided and see more pics!!!

    Come visit painted whyte anytime!!

  4. Hmmm...something seems a little "off" and I can't really figure it out. But I think, when I look at it, I see a lot of bright white, and a lot of dark DARK. There are no midtones, do you know what I mean?

Okay, so you totally didn't ask that, but I gave my input anyway. :) As far as the mirrors go, it's hard to tell in that pic. Can you take a pic farther back showing the wall up to the ceiling??

  5. Hi Elizabeth. I think you accidentally left me a comment meant for Linda! You were responding to her question about comments.

  6. Hi Elizabeth!
Do you have other shots of the room?
I could suggest placement if I could see those?

BTW--I nominated you for a Sunshine Award today :)
    Check it out at:

  7. You have such nice pieces to work with. I'm not a fan of the mirrors at the sides. Maybe you could do an arrangement of different sizes and shapes of mirrors in an arrangement above the sofa. I'd like to see a hint of a print, too, maybe a faded antique-looking floral that has your yellow tones in it. Good luck, you already of have good taste ;).

I really LOVE getting comments and read each one. They truly make me smile! If you have a question I will email you. Due to a huge increase in spam comments I have enabled comment moderation but I will post all friendly comments. Have a great day and thanks so much for stopping by!
